World Rhythms @ Artfest 2016

Artfest Kingston’s pilot project in collaboration with Yessica Rivera Belsham,  “World Rhythms @ ArtFest”, is a vibrant addition to the community. The three day hands-on world rhythms and movement workshops/activities at Artfest Kingston on July 1st, 2nd , and 3rd, 2016 will be located in the Friendship Gardens in City Park (by corner of West St and Bagot St)

World Rhythms @ ArtFest will feature:

·      Kingston Drum Circle: Kingston’s non-profit open intergenerational multicultural community drum circle. All are welcome to join in with any instrument. Extra drums, shakers, and other percussion available. No experience needed. Be sure to join!

·      Quetzalcoatl Kingston: Bright colourful modernized prehispanic huehuetl drums will be at the festival! Join Yessica at the beginning of each day with meditative drum and song.

·      SamBatuKana: Stu Pike along with other members of Kingston’s samba band, SamBatuKana, will lead an interactive samba workshop with Brazilian instruments

·      Axé Capoeira Kingston: Jean Kwanda and members of Axé Capoeira will be sharing an interactive mood elevating experience through the art of Capoeira which blends elements of self-defence, acrobatics, and music.

·      Kings DON Taiko: Kyoko Ogoda from the Japanese Taiko drumming group will be giving a powerful Taiko drumming workshop.

·      John Torres: Join soulful musician John Torres in an open community jam.

·      Kingston Belly Dance Collective: June Shepherd of the Kingston Belly Dance Collective will engage any interested spectators to dance among the drummers during the community drum circles. Anyone can join in! Extra belly dancing skirts available.

·      Rhythm Momentum: Kingston’s multicultural rhythm performance group will be offering rhythm workshops to beginners. Learn the basics of playing the conga drum and djembe drum with Brian Howell, Linda Beazley, and Yessica Rivera Belsham.

World Rhythms @ ArtFest was made possible through the collaboration of ArtFest Kingston, Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, Circle of Wellness and all participating groups/organizations/artists.
