The Resolutionaries bringing African Culture to Artfest

The Resolutionaries Marimba Band is a product of bandleader Chaka Chikodzi’s local arts’ organization, Dandaro Centre, where he runs an African arts’ and music summer camp for youth.

Two especially keen students, brother and sister Julian and Anna Tenant, joined Chikodzi to create The Resolutionaries in 2009, and the three form the core of the band, playing bass, tenor, and soprano marimbas. Marimba means “wooden voice” in Shona, and is a percussion instrument that resembles a xylophone, but with wooden keys.

The Resolutionaries play a mix of age-old Zimbabwean tunes, modern innovations and transatlantic “livasporic” inspiration.
