Ted Devine was born in Ottawa, Ontario. His formative years were spent in the National Capital and upon completion of high school, continued his post-secondary education at Ottawa University, Carleton University, Queen’s University and MacArthur College of Education. He graduated these noble institutions with Bachelor’s Degrees in English and Physical Education, and Honours Degree in English and Physical Education and a Type A Teaching Certificate. He pursued a High School teaching career for five years before deciding to take a sabbatical. During this time he, quite by chance, discovered the worlds of silver and gold, and the rest is history. He has continued on this fascinating path for thirty odd years.
Carol Devine was raised in Toronto and Ottawa. She attended Carleton University and Algonquin College from which she graduated with a Diploma in Interior Design. In her senior year at Algonquin she met Ted and they have worked together ever since! They have two sons – Jake and Sullivan.
Tracey Cavanagh grew up in Ashton, Ontario and attended Algonquin College where she earned her Degree in Recreation-Leadership. While employed as Assistant Administrator for Ottawa’s Jazz Festival in 1987, Devine was in need of a manager, and Tracey was able to bridge her loyalty to the Festival that year with her new position of Manager of Devine Fine Jewellery. Tracey has continued in her role as Manager since then, much to the delight of Carol, Ted and countless clients.
Ted is, for the most part, self taught (books, research, trial and error) but did have some formal training in Ottawa, Toronto and Providence, Rhode Island, USA. He began his professional career at craft shows on the Terraces of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and graduated to a variety of shop fronts in Ottawa’s Byward Market. These experiences evolved into our Shop at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier (Ottawa) where we have welcomed our clientele since 1982.
Devine Fine Jewellery in the Chateau Laurier features Ted’s creations and is complimented by eight additional Canadian Jewellers. Ted works in various karats and colours of gold as well as sterling silver, often incorporating precious or semi-precious gem stones. He is known for clean, uncluttered and practical designs as well as perfectly fashioned bezel settings. Unusual for their trade, Ted and Carol do all of their own work – designing, making by hand, stone setting, polishing and marketing. Carol’s rendering and artistic eye combined with Ted’s magic at the workbench creates a stellar atmosphere to marry an artist’s talent with a client’s wishes for the numerous custom pieces they create each year.
